Tragedy struck in Palm Beach County, Florida, as a Learjet 60 crashed on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the loss of all nine individuals aboard. Preliminary reports from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) indicate that the aircraft may have suffered “some breakup” before impact.

The ill-fated flight, which took off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, was en route to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas when it crashed around 12:50 p.m. near the Cresthaven neighborhood in Greenacres, roughly seven miles from West Palm Beach.

According to NTSB member Tom Chapman, there is evidence suggesting the aircraft experienced disintegration prior to hitting the ground. “We do have some evidence that there was some breakup of the aircraft before impact,” Chapman stated.

Eyewitness accounts and dashcam footage reveal the plane plummeting rapidly, culminating in a catastrophic explosion upon impact, which left a significant crater in the roadway. Following the incident, a distress call was made, with a female voice aboard the plane urgently declaring, “Mayday, mayday. We’re descending 10,000 feet per minute,” before the transmission became unintelligible.

The crew included a 20-year-old co-pilot, Nathalia Filgueiras, whose family shared her lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. “Flying was her biggest passion,” her sister expressed, highlighting the profound loss felt by her loved ones.

Weather conditions at the time of the crash are under scrutiny, as a flood watch was in effect across southern Florida, accompanied by forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash as “cataclysmic,” noting the extensive debris field that resulted from the impact.

In the aftermath, approximately 600 residents were evacuated from nearby homes, with efforts underway to restore access to the area. The investigation continues as authorities work diligently to uncover the factors that led to this devastating incident. Learjet manufacturer Bombardier expressed deep sorrow regarding the crash, pledging full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
