In a surprising turn of events, Rep. Richard Hudson, a prominent figure in the Republican Party and the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, has lost his re-election bid. NBC News has projected that Hudson was defeated by Democrat Richard Ojeda in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District.
The race was closely contested, with Ojeda edging out Hudson by approximately two percentage points. This outcome is significant, particularly as Republicans have maintained control over the district since 1963.
Hudson’s defeat marks the second consecutive midterm election cycle in which a party campaign chair has failed to secure re-election, following the loss of former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Sean Patrick Maloney in 2022.
This unexpected result comes amid a broader trend of shifting political dynamics in North Carolina. Recent weeks saw the Republican party withdraw substantial investments from the state’s high-profile Senate race, where former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper had established a significant lead over Republican candidate Michael Whatley.
As of the latest updates, Cooper is projected to lead Whatley by nearly 20 points, potentially benefiting multiple Democratic candidates down the ballot in the state.
