In a poignant news conference, Allan Filgueiras shared his heart-wrenching experience as he listened to the final moments of his daughter, 20-year-old Nathalia Filgueiras, who co-piloted a Learjet that tragically crashed in Florida, claiming the lives of all nine individuals onboard. The emotional recording revealed Nathalia’s desperate efforts to maintain control of the aircraft in its last moments.
“She fought until the last second,” Allan reflected, expressing immense pride in his daughter’s bravery. He described how the recording serves as a testament to her character, adding, “She showed me what it is to be a hero.” This was Allan’s first public statement since the devastating incident.
At the conference held on Friday, Allan was accompanied by attorney Stuart Grossman, who emphasized the importance of honoring Nathalia’s memory and reputation. Grossman stated, “Nathalia was not just an average pilot; she was extraordinary,” highlighting her dedication to aviation which was inspired by her father’s own passion.
As a testament to her commitment, Nathalia earned her pilot’s license while still in high school, with her father playing a crucial role in her training. Grossman noted that her skills and qualifications would surprise many, stating, “Wait until you see her hours, and what the government proves about her capabilities. She was really special. This is a loss to aviation.”
Allan vividly recalled the joy his daughter felt when she entered a program that funded her training, saying, “It was her happiest moment.” However, the tragedy has left him grappling with profound sorrow. “It feels like someone is tearing the heart right out of my chest,” he expressed, determined to find a way to honor Nathalia’s legacy and make her proud.
The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the crash, having deployed 20 investigators to gather evidence and ascertain the cause of the incident. As they continue their work, Allan and the families of the other victims await answers, while remembering the lives lost and the dreams that were cut short. “We’re not making allegations against anybody at this time. We’re going to do the right thing,” Grossman stated, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation.
