Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut has been discharged from The Johns Hopkins Hospital following a small hemorrhagic stroke he suffered last weekend. His office confirmed that Murphy, 53, is on a path to recovery and will undergo rehabilitation for several weeks.

In a statement, Murphy revealed that he experienced symptoms during his son’s hockey game, prompting him to seek medical attention. “I felt something was not right with my body and called 9-1-1 out of an abundance of caution, and I’m glad I did,” he said. Doctors diagnosed him with a small bleed in the thalamus region of the brain.

Murphy expressed gratitude for the support from his medical team and noted that he intends to remain engaged with his staff remotely as they continue to serve constituents and handle legislative priorities during his recovery period. Dr. Jose Suarez, head of neurosciences critical care at Johns Hopkins, indicated that the senator has shown significant improvement and is expected to make a full recovery.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, leading to bleeding. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, and one-sided weakness. While it remains unclear what specifically triggered Murphy’s stroke, he joins a list of Democratic senators, including Ben Ray Luján and John Fetterman, who have experienced similar health issues in recent years.

Despite not being up for re-election this cycle, Murphy has been active in supporting fellow Democratic candidates and is viewed as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race. As deputy secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus, he plays a crucial role in legislative matters and sits on several key committees.
