Authorities in Lansing, Michigan, are investigating a troubling pattern of deaths along a local river trail, raising suspicions of a potential serial killer in the area. Since last October, five individuals, all believed to be homeless, have lost their lives under mysterious circumstances.
Lansing Police Chief Robert Backus announced the ongoing investigation during a recent press briefing, stating, “We are exploring all possibilities that these cases may be interconnected.” The investigation has heightened concerns among the community as it appears that three of the deaths have been classified as homicides, while the circumstances surrounding the other two remain unclear.
The deceased include Gino Chouinard, 54, who died last October, and Denis Dunnebacke, 70, who passed away in July shortly after being found unresponsive. The other victims, Robert Smith and Louis Woodruff, were also discovered with serious injuries. Notably, all four men suffered blunt force trauma to the head, but no weapons have been identified in these cases.
Chief Backus emphasized the challenges faced by investigators, citing the lack of surveillance footage and witnesses in the vicinity at the times of the incidents, which are believed to have occurred in the early morning hours. In response, the police department has deployed camera trailers along the trail and increased patrols in the area to enhance safety.
While one suspect, Edward Smith, 24, has been arrested in connection with the stabbing death of Daniel Lusk in August, he has not been charged in relation to the other deaths. Backus clarified that the investigation remains active and the police are determined to uncover the truth behind these tragic events.
As the community grapples with these unsettling developments, residents have expressed their fears and concerns regarding safety along the river trail. Backus reassured the public that all cases are being taken seriously and that the police are committed to ensuring the safety of the area.
