In a striking revelation on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina has expressed serious concerns regarding President Trump’s recent decision to ease sanctions on Russia. This move, intended to facilitate the release of diesel fuel into the global market, may potentially violate U.S. law, according to Tillis.

“There is a legitimate case for saying that the president is not following the law,” Tillis stated, reflecting on the implications of Trump’s announcement.

Trump had previously declared on his Truth Social platform that Russia would soon provide substantial amounts of diesel fuel to the market, a decision that has incited backlash from both Ukraine and various critics of the Trump administration. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, U.S. lawmakers took decisive action to impose financial penalties on Moscow, passing a bill in 2022 to prohibit Russian oil imports—a legislative framework that has not been adapted since Trump’s recent declarations.

When questioned by moderator Kristen Welker about whether he believes Trump’s actions could be illegal, Tillis responded affirmatively, suggesting that the president’s dealings with Russia could indeed jeopardize American lives. He emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “We were very clear that Russia is the aggressor.” He urged that the responsibility to end the war lies squarely with Russia, which must withdraw from occupied territories.

The White House has not yet commented on Tillis’s allegations. As a Republican senator facing retirement, Tillis is aware that his seat is a key target for Democrats aiming to gain control of the Senate. His criticisms extend beyond Trump’s foreign policy, as he has also condemned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, labeling him a “failed leader” and indicating regret over his earlier support for Hegseth’s confirmation.

Tillis has openly criticized the Pentagon’s controversial plan to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of a mass shooting at Fort Hood. He argued that such actions could radicalize individuals and become a powerful propaganda tool for terrorist organizations. “This is not who we are,” he stated emphatically, reinforcing his call for stronger leadership within the Department of Defense.
