In a significant development, federal agents conducted a search of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s residence in Washington, D.C., on Monday. This operation is part of an ongoing criminal investigation, as confirmed by two sources familiar with the matter.

The search was executed by Homeland Security Investigations, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, under a judicially authorized warrant issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ). A DOJ spokesperson noted that this action forms part of a larger federal criminal investigation, though they did not disclose any specific details related to the nature of the inquiry.

Omar’s office has yet to provide a response to requests for comment on the search. The incident was first reported by Fox News, raising questions about its timing, given the proximity to the upcoming midterm elections, for which Omar is seeking re-election in Minnesota. Historically, the Justice Department has been cautious about conducting significant actions close to election dates, to avoid any perceived influence on the electoral process.

While there is no formal policy barring the DOJ from acting within 60 days of an election, there exists an unwritten practice advising caution in such matters. This follows previous instances where the timing of FBI actions, such as James Comey’s announcement regarding Hillary Clinton’s emails, has drawn public scrutiny.

Last month, Tom Homan, the border czar, indicated that investigations into Omar were underway, stating that if any violations occurred, “no one’s above the law,” regardless of their position. This follows a series of high-profile fraud cases in Minnesota, particularly surrounding a $250 million scheme related to COVID-19 relief funds, which has seen numerous individuals charged with various crimes.

The congresswoman, who immigrated to the U.S. from Somalia as a child, has been a target of criticism from President Donald Trump, who has previously suggested that the DOJ and Congress are investigating her actions. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments may impact her campaign and the broader political landscape heading into the elections.
