In a grim revelation that has captivated both local and national audiences, authorities have identified human remains discovered in a barrel at Lake Mead as belonging to Edward Lelburian Jackson, a man who was murdered in the 1980s. This identification marks a significant development in a case that has remained cold for decades.
The skeletal remains, found in May 2022 as water levels at Lake Mead dropped due to ongoing drought conditions, were first linked to Jackson after genealogical testing was conducted by Oklahoma State University. The coroner’s office confirmed that Jackson, who was in his mid-50s at the time of his death, suffered a gunshot wound to the head, indicating foul play.
Despite the identification, the question of who killed Jackson remains unanswered. Investigators believe he was murdered in the early 1980s, based on clothing remnants and information gathered from his family. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lieutenant Robert Price stated that while speculation regarding organized crime has surfaced, there is currently no evidence to support such theories.
Jackson, originally from Arkansas, was known to have traveled extensively across the United States. However, he had no direct ties to Las Vegas, and reports indicate he was not known to gamble. His life remains shrouded in mystery, as family members provide limited insights about his past, referring to him merely as “Uncle Buddy.”
As police continue their investigation, they have reached out to the public for assistance in piecing together Jackson’s life. “It’s an unsolved case. It’ll never be closed until we solve it,” Price remarked, emphasizing the need for any information that could help clarify the circumstances surrounding Jackson’s untimely death.
The discovery of Jackson’s remains is part of a larger trend at Lake Mead, where several sets of human remains have been found in recent years. The ongoing drought has not only revealed these grim discoveries but also highlighted the impacts of climate change on water levels in the reservoir, which is a critical water source for the region.
As the investigation unfolds, the community hopes that answers will emerge, bringing closure to a case that has lingered in the shadows for far too long.
