A tragic incident at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left the community in mourning after a shooting claimed the lives of three children, including a 5-year-old boy, and one teacher. The family of Rhoam Summer, the young victim, expressed their heartbreak, stating they feel “broken and lost” in the wake of the tragedy.
The shooting unfolded on Thursday during school hours, with Rhoam being identified as one of the innocent lives taken. Reports indicate that an armed bystander intervened, fatally shooting the teenage gunman and preventing further casualties. However, the emotional toll on the families affected is profound.
Kelik Summer, Rhoam’s mother, took to social media to share her devastating loss, calling Thursday “the worst day of my life.” She expressed gratitude for the support from friends and family, which is helping them cope with the unimaginable grief.
Local authorities have confirmed that the shooting targeted a special education classroom, although further details remain under investigation. Among the injured is a 7-year-old child who was shot in the face and is currently recovering after surgery, as well as another teacher identified as Rebecca Drury.
Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler attended a community vigil, stating, “There are simply no words for the loss that we have suffered today.” The mayor’s remarks reflect the collective sorrow felt throughout the community as they grapple with the aftermath of this horrific event.
The hero of the day, identified as Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two whose children attend the school, has been praised for his brave actions. Despite being hailed as a hero, Giamanco reportedly struggles with feelings of guilt over the lives lost that day.
As the community begins to heal, the focus remains on supporting those affected, including the families of the victims and the injured. “We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support, prayers, and well-wishes following yesterday’s tragedy,” said Drury’s husband, underscoring the need for compassion during this difficult time.
