As the midterm elections loom just weeks away, a recent poll reveals a staggering 71% of American adults believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction. This figure marks the highest level of discontent during President Donald Trump’s second term, highlighting the challenges his party faces in the upcoming elections, according to the NBC News Decision Desk Poll.
The findings reflect a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction among voters, particularly regarding economic conditions. Many Americans express distrust toward both major political parties, but Trump and the Republicans are facing the brunt of this discontent. The poll indicates a significant decline in the perception of the country being on the “right track,” with numbers slipping into the 20s for the first time in Trump’s presidency.
Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 34%, representing a new low, while disapproval has surged to 66%. Alarmingly, 51% of respondents indicated they “strongly disapprove” of his performance, the highest rate recorded during his second term.
While registered voters show a slightly better approval for Trump (39%-61%), they also prefer Democrats to control Congress, with a 55%-45% margin. This trend signals potential threats to the GOP’s majority in both the House and Senate as Election Day approaches.
Despite the GOP’s woes, Americans harbor negative sentiments toward Democrats as well. Only 43% of adults view the Democratic Party favorably, while 57% hold unfavorable opinions. The Republican Party fares even worse, with just 37% favorable ratings against 63% unfavorable.
Among Republican voters, 76% still support Trump, but this figure has declined, particularly among those who align more with the party than the MAGA movement. The poll reveals that only 21% of independents approve of Trump, and among younger men, his approval has dropped to 28%.
As economic concerns dominate the landscape, with inflation impacting daily life, 58% of respondents believe Trump’s policies are detrimental to the country. The poll indicates that rising gas prices and living costs have prompted many Americans to adjust their spending habits significantly.
Trump has attempted to incentivize voters with promises of $5,000 payments if Republicans maintain control in the midterms, but skepticism abounds; only 14% of Americans believe they will actually receive such a payment.
The poll also sheds light on the growing sentiment that corruption is a critical issue, with over half of U.S. adults considering Trump’s administration to be more corrupt than past ones. This perception extends to both parties, with a majority believing corruption is equally prevalent among Democrats and Republicans.
Looking ahead, the survey indicates a shift in voters’ preferences, with many expressing a desire for politicians who resonate with progressive causes over traditional party lines. This sentiment may reflect a changing political landscape as dissatisfaction with the status quo grows.
In a divided nation, the upcoming elections will undoubtedly test the resilience of both major parties amid widespread discontent and calls for change. The NBC News Decision Desk Poll, conducted with 19,135 adults from September 28 to October 12, boasts a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
