In a tragic incident on Saturday, a vehicle crashed through a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, resulting in the deaths of a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man. Witnesses described harrowing scenes as the pickup truck drove through the Stryker Sports Complex, leaving nearly a dozen people injured.
The victims, identified as Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer, were both from McPherson, Kansas. The collision occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m., and involved a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup that careened onto the field, striking players and spectators alike.
Among the witnesses, Erica Case shared her traumatic experience, recalling the moment she heard loud revving followed by what she initially thought were gunshots. “I lost it because it wasn’t just adults. It was also children,” she said, expressing the emotional toll the event took on her.
David Griekspoor, who was at the complex with his nephew, described the chaos, stating, “It sounded like small gunfire.” He watched as the truck barreled through a line of people, prompting him to quickly pull his nephew to safety.
In total, ten others ranging in age from 5 to 68 were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The police have stated that they interviewed over 30 witnesses to gather more details about the event.
The driver of the pickup, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, was initially taken into custody but later released after consultation with the district attorney’s office. Authorities indicated that she had two children in the vehicle and was attending the soccer complex for her child’s game.
As investigations continue, the community grapples with the emotional aftermath of this shocking event, reflecting on the lives forever altered by this tragedy. Police are awaiting results from examinations of the vehicle and toxicology tests on the driver to determine what led to this devastating accident.
