The Kansas Senate race, once considered a foregone conclusion for Republicans, has transformed into a heated contest as incumbent Senator Roger Marshall and Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton clashed in their second and final debate on Wednesday night. With the election just days away, polls indicate a surprisingly tight race in a state traditionally dominated by the GOP.

During the debate, the candidates exchanged sharp criticisms on a range of issues including immigration, healthcare, and the ongoing war in Iran. Hamilton, a first-time candidate and pastor, branded himself as a centrist and independent thinker, distancing himself from what he termed the extremes of the Democratic Party.

Marshall, however, sought to paint Hamilton as a puppet of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, emphasizing his opponent’s ties to the Democratic establishment throughout the debate, mentioning Schumer a staggering 17 times. “My opponent’s going to say anything he can to lie to get into that office and give control to Chuck Schumer,” Marshall declared, despite Hamilton’s assurances that he would not support Schumer for party leadership if elected.

Both candidates faced questions about their pasts, with Marshall denying allegations that he had sued patients over unpaid medical bills during his medical career, while Hamilton addressed controversies related to allegations of mishandling reports of child abuse within his church.

Marshall defended President Trump’s policies, including tariffs and sanctions, asserting that these measures are part of a broader strategy to revitalize American manufacturing. Hamilton countered this by arguing that such tariffs are damaging relationships with U.S. allies and contributing to economic instability.

As the debate wrapped up, it was clear that the stakes are high for both campaigns. Republicans are heavily investing in the race to prevent Hamilton from becoming the first Democratic senator from Kansas in nearly a century, with Trump himself rallying support for Marshall in the days leading up to the election. With the final votes looming, this race promises to be one of the most closely watched contests in the upcoming election.
