LONDON — In a troubling turn of events, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has expressed her profound distress over allegations concerning her estranged father, Thomas Markle. Reports surfaced indicating that he is under investigation for possessing child sexual abuse images, a matter that Meghan claims she was made aware of through police communications back in 2018.

On Friday, Meghan released a statement addressing the shocking claims against her father, who resides in the Philippines. The allegations were initially reported by The Sun, a British tabloid, which stated that Markle’s son alerted authorities after discovering concerning images at his father’s home. Thomas Markle Jr. was quoted as saying he would not communicate with his father unless called as a witness against him.

Responding to the serious accusations, Thomas Markle Sr. vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them as “sick lies” and asserting that they represent the worst accusations anyone could make against him. He is reportedly currently in a rehabilitation center in Florida following surgery.

Meghan has had a strained relationship with her father, who did not attend her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018. In her statement, she emphasized her decision to keep her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, away from him was purely for their protection. “I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed,” she stated.

She further elaborated that she had been informed of a troubling letter sent to British police concerning her father, and expressed hope that justice would prevail, prioritizing the safety of innocent children. Meghan, now 45, and Harry, 42, recently returned to the U.K. after several years in the U.S., making their first public appearance together last week, although King Charles III has indicated that their return does not imply a return to royal duties.
