In a harrowing turn of events, Kaylub Giamanco, a carpenter from Bend, Oregon, found himself at the center of a tragedy that unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary School. On October 15, he unexpectedly intervened in a shooting incident, believing it might be his final act. Giamanco’s courageous decision has left him grappling with the aftermath of the incident, where he reflects, “I didn’t save everybody.”

Responding to the chaos, Giamanco confronted the shooter, 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, who had already taken the lives of a teacher and three children. His actions have been credited by police as a pivotal moment that prevented further loss of life.

In an emotional interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting, Giamanco recounted the day that changed his life. He described his feelings of insignificance before the incident, saying, “I’ve always wanted to change the world, but I’ve felt small.” It was a series of seemingly ordinary choices that led him to the school that day, including a change of lunch plans that ultimately placed him in the right spot at the right time.

As Giamanco approached the school, he heard the cries of children and the sound of gunfire. Driven by instinct, he crawled through a broken window and entered a special education classroom, ready for confrontation. He recalled, “I fired,” as he took aim at the gunman engaged in a struggle with a teacher.

After the shooter was downed, Giamanco made frantic calls to his loved ones, a moment he described as surreal, particularly when speaking to his mother. Her comforting words, “You did the right thing. You’re a hero,” contrasted sharply with his feelings of inadequacy for not saving every victim.

Now, as he processes the trauma and the weight of his decisions, Giamanco remains committed to using his experience to advocate for change, determined to make a better world, despite the heavy burden he carries from that fateful day.
