As the 2026 elections draw near, candidates Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan and Ken Paxton of Texas are facing challenges in uniting their parties after tumultuous primary elections. Recent focus group discussions reveal that many voters, particularly those who supported losing candidates, are struggling to reconcile their loyalty to party nominees with personal reservations about the candidates. This dilemma could significantly impact the upcoming elections and the control of the Senate.

The focus groups, facilitated by Syracuse University alongside research firms Engagious and Sago, highlighted a divide among voters. In Michigan, supporters of Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens, who lost in the primary, expressed concerns about El-Sayed’s perceived extremity, with some citing his Muslim faith as a factor in their hesitation. Meanwhile, Texas voters who had backed Republican Sen. John Cornyn showed reluctance towards Paxton, acknowledging his controversial past but feeling compelled to support him for party loyalty.

Rich Thau, who moderated the groups, noted that the voters felt torn, grappling with their choices as they sought to justify their preferences in a political landscape riddled with ethical concerns. “These undecided voters truly contorted themselves as they struggled to justify a choice they feared they’d later regret,” he stated.

With both El-Sayed and Paxton needing to mend the rifts within their parties, they are tasked with not only gaining the support of their respective bases but also appealing to those who may be swayed by the opposition. As Election Day approaches, the stakes are high for these candidates, with the potential to reshape the Senate majority hanging in the balance.
