After an impressive 43-year tenure with CNN, renowned journalist Christiane Amanpour has announced her departure from the network, set to take effect at the end of June 2027. This marks a significant transition for both Amanpour and the organization as she prepares to embark on a new chapter in her career.
In a communication to CNN staff, CEO Mark Thompson expressed his understanding of Amanpour’s decision, stating, “I’m very sorry to see her go, but I’ve come to accept that this is the right time for her, both personally and professionally.” Amanpour, 68, is expected to reduce the frequency of her international show to once a week starting in early 2027, with the program concluding in May.
Throughout her distinguished career, Amanpour has reported on numerous pivotal global events, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Bosnian War, and the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, showcasing her remarkable ability to cover complex issues with depth and insight. Her interviews with prominent world leaders have also solidified her status as a leading figure in journalism.
Reflecting on her time at CNN, Amanpour expressed gratitude for her colleagues, emphasizing the collaborative efforts to deliver factual and humane reporting. “We together battled to seek the facts, the evidence and the humanity, so that CNN could always broadcast the truth about the world and to the world, without fear nor favor,” she noted.
Amanpour’s exit coincides with a significant shift at CNN, following Paramount Skydance’s recent acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company. Thompson will continue to lead CNN under the new ownership structure, reporting to the co-CEOs of Skydance.
As she moves on from CNN, Amanpour leaves behind a remarkable legacy of journalistic integrity and excellence that has inspired countless viewers and future journalists alike.
