Christina Applegate has revealed a surprising twist in her health journey, disclosing that she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis after living with the belief for over five years. In a heartfelt episode of her podcast “MeSsy,” the Emmy-nominated actress shared her emotional reaction to learning the news from her doctor, who told her, “Congratulations. You don’t have MS.” Despite the relief that comes with this revelation, Applegate expressed frustration, stating she is “back at square one” with her health struggles.
During the podcast, Applegate, who has faced various debilitating symptoms, broke down as she recounted this unexpected turn of events. “You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of a sudden I’m better,” she lamented while speaking with her co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who herself has lived with multiple sclerosis for approximately 25 years.
Applegate first revealed her diagnosis in 2021, describing her ordeal as “a tough road.” Earlier this year, she spent significant time in the hospital, and she has since taken a step back from co-hosting duties on her podcast. She received a standing ovation at the 2024 Emmy Awards, where she made a notable appearance with a cane, and has previously described living with her condition as feeling “kind of in hell.”
Now, her medical team is tasked with identifying the true cause of her symptoms, which she noted were consistent with those of multiple sclerosis. “Why did this happen? I had every symptom of someone with MS. Every single one,” Applegate said, reflecting on the confusion of her situation.
Best known for her roles in “Married with Children” and “Dead to Me,” Applegate has garnered eight Emmy nominations throughout her career, winning one for her guest appearance on “Friends” in 2003. As she navigates this new chapter, her fans and the public continue to support her through her challenges.
