In a significant move to challenge Republican dominance in Mississippi, Senate Majority PAC has launched a $1.2 million advertising campaign to support Democrat Scott Colom in his bid against incumbent GOP Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. This strategic effort highlights the Democrats’ ambition to make inroads in traditionally red states as they aim for a Senate majority.
Colom, a prosecutor, is featured in the campaign’s initial 30-second advertisement, which portrays him as a candidate committed to fighting corruption across party lines while criticizing Hyde-Smith as ineffective. The PAC plans to continue its advertising efforts across various platforms leading up to Election Day.
Lauren French, a spokesperson for Senate Majority PAC, emphasized Colom’s competitive position, suggesting that his campaign has placed Hyde-Smith on the defensive. The Democrats require a net gain of four seats in the Senate to reclaim control, making states like Mississippi critical targets despite their Republican leanings.
Notably, Mississippi has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1982, and Donald Trump secured the state with a 23-point margin in the 2024 election. The state represents one of the most challenging landscapes for Democrats, with Hyde-Smith seeking her second full term after winning a special election in 2018 and a full term in 2020.
Colom’s candidacy was partly motivated by Hyde-Smith’s support for legislation that he argues has harmed Medicaid funding, and although she blocked his nomination for a federal judgeship during the Biden administration, he has publicly forgiven her. As the race intensifies, both candidates will likely continue to draw on their past interactions and the current political climate to sway voters.
