In a significant legal development, two former FBI officials, Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides, have been charged with lying to Congress regarding their involvement in investigations related to Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden. This move has raised eyebrows, particularly given the officials’ previous scrutiny by allies of former President Donald Trump.
The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, announced the charges, claiming that both individuals misled Congress about their roles within the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force and their participation in the Hunter Biden investigations. They have been accused of a rare criminal offense that can be notoriously difficult to prosecute.
Floris, who previously served as the deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division, and Benavides, a colleague focused on election security, surrendered to authorities last Friday. According to Pirro, their alleged fabrications came to light amid ongoing investigations that have been politically charged.
In response, Floris’s legal team has vehemently denied the accusations, labeling her a “patriot” who dedicated nearly two decades to serving the nation. They argue that the charges are politically motivated, concocted to support a false narrative as the nation approaches a crucial electoral period.
Benavides’s attorney has yet to be identified in court documents, adding another layer of uncertainty to the unfolding situation. The charges come on the heels of previous investigations into Hunter Biden, who faced his own legal troubles involving gun and tax crimes, eventually receiving a pardon from his father after the latter assumed office.
As the legal proceedings develop, the case will inevitably draw attention to the broader implications of political influence within law enforcement and the ongoing partisan divisions surrounding the Biden administration.
