In a tragic incident during a livestreamed Mass, a priest in Ecuador lost his life after a crucifix fell on him, as confirmed by church representatives and footage of the event. The Rev. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, who served at the Church of Perpetual Relief in Guayaquil, was struck by the crucifix while facing his congregation.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil reported the priest’s death, describing it as a significant loss for the parish community. Molinari was noted to have “left to the House of the Father to enjoy his presence and glory,” according to an official announcement.
During the livestreamed service, a large crucifix that hung behind him suddenly toppled, hitting him on the back of the head. Eyewitnesses on the video could be heard gasping and crying out as they rushed to assist him, but he did not regain consciousness.
A memorial Eucharist in his honor is planned for Sunday evening, showing the deep impact his sudden passing has had on the community he served.
