A tragic alligator attack in Florida has resulted in the death of a 71-year-old man, identified as Steven Hamilton. The incident occurred while he was fishing at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park, located in Winter Garden, approximately 15 miles west of Orlando.
Authorities from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reported that Hamilton was bitten by an alligator during his fishing outing. Emergency responders received eyewitness accounts suggesting that he had been dragged into the water by the animal. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In response to the attack, the Winter Garden Police Department confirmed that a 12-foot alligator was subsequently trapped and killed by wildlife officials. This incident underscores the rarity of serious alligator attacks in Florida, with the FWC noting that such occurrences are infrequent.
This incident follows a similar tragedy earlier this year when a 31-year-old woman lost her life to an alligator attack at Little Big Econ State Forest, highlighting the potential dangers associated with local wildlife.
Winter Garden police Capt. Michael Mason urged the public to remain vigilant while enjoying outdoor activities. “Always be aware of your surroundings. Always be safe,” he advised, reminding residents that, despite their seemingly docile appearance, alligators can pose significant risks.
Mason also encouraged anyone who witnessed the attack to come forward and speak with authorities to assist in the investigation.
