Etsy has taken a significant step to ensure the authenticity of its marketplace by imposing new limitations on AI-generated content. This decision comes amid increasing concerns from consumers regarding the quality and trustworthiness of products listed on the platform.

The online marketplace’s latest guidelines, announced on Thursday, are aimed at preserving the integrity of handmade goods and safeguarding buyers from potential fraud. Key restrictions include:

  • Prohibiting the use of AI to create items that require buyer participation, such as patterns or recipes.
  • Mandating sellers to provide at least one genuine photo of the actual product against a real background.
  • Banning any listings generated solely by bots.

Despite these restrictions, Etsy will still allow the sale of AI-generated art, provided that sellers actively participate in the creation process and maintain transparency regarding how the art was produced.

James Ossman, Etsy’s Vice President of Customer Operations, stressed the importance of trust in the marketplace. He stated, “Sellers need clear guidance and confidence that their creativity and craftsmanship will be represented fairly; buyers need to understand what they’re buying and the human involvement behind it.”

As of 2024, Etsy facilitated around $10.9 billion in sales, a fraction compared to giants like Amazon and eBay, which reported $700 billion and $75 billion, respectively. This makes Etsy’s commitment to quality even more crucial in differentiating itself from larger e-commerce platforms.

In recent times, consumers have expressed frustration over AI-generated content, particularly in areas like crochet patterns where the results often fail to meet expectations. Creator Kara Lynne shared her dissatisfaction on social media, highlighting the confusion caused by poorly generated AI materials.

In response to consumer discontent, other major platforms like Facebook and Instagram have begun labeling AI-generated content, while LinkedIn has introduced features for reporting such listings. Etsy plans to implement similar reporting tools to enhance user experience and trust.

Ossman affirmed that Etsy is actively working to address the challenges presented by AI in their marketplace, declaring, “This work is hard, and we don’t have every answer today. But I believe this is an important moment for Etsy, and that these initial steps are putting us on the right path.”
