In Newport, Oregon, residents are facing an urgent evacuation order following a fire at the Pacific Seafood plant, which poses a risk of ammonia contamination. The incident occurred Sunday morning, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at approximately 11 a.m. local time, as reported by the Lincoln County Oregon Emergency Management Office. This major seafood processing facility is located in the Bayfront neighborhood, and officials have labeled the area as experiencing “extreme danger.”
The city issued Level 3 evacuation orders for those living within a one-mile radius of the plant, urging immediate departure due to the potential hazards associated with ammonia exposure. As the situation evolved, some areas were downgraded to Level 2, indicating a need for residents to remain vigilant.
Ammonia, a colorless and pungent gas, can be especially harmful in high concentrations, leading to skin and respiratory issues. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that severe exposure can cause lasting lung damage or even be fatal.
Authorities advised locals in Newport to stay indoors and wear masks if they must venture outside. Fortunately, officials from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office confirmed that an ammonia tank was located on-site and appeared to be intact, with no leaks detected.
For those displaced by the fire, a temporary shelter has been set up at Atonement Lutheran Church. Despite the chaos, city spokesperson John Fuller noted that no injuries have been reported, and all staff members were accounted for during the incident.
As firefighters continue to battle the flames, authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which remains unknown at this time. Visuals from the scene depict thick smoke pouring from the building, with emergency crews working diligently to control the situation.
Pacific Seafood expressed gratitude for the first responders and stated they are cooperating fully with officials to ensure the safety and health of the community following this alarming event.
