In a shocking turn of events, a Florida police officer has been arrested for allegedly taking over the life of a deceased man whose body he discovered during a welfare check. Brian Louis Sguros, a 35-year-old officer from the Lauderhill Police Department, is accused of moving into 71-year-old Dennis West’s home shortly after finding him dead in July 2022.

According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Sguros responded to a welfare check at West’s residence on July 11, 2022, where he found that West had passed away from natural causes. Following this, Sguros allegedly filed paperwork claiming he was a friend of West, despite not having any known connection to him, and asserted that West had no surviving relatives. This claim has been disputed by authorities.

After West’s death, investigators allege that Sguros moved into the home in August 2022 and began impersonating him. He reportedly paid taxes and utilities under West’s name, used his identification to obtain permits for home renovations, and even forged West’s signature on official documents.

Sguros has been charged with multiple felonies, including official misconduct and the unlawful use of a deceased person’s identification. He was arrested on Tuesday and is currently being held on a $25,000 bond. Following his arrest, Sguros was placed on administrative leave without pay.

As this bizarre case unfolds, it raises significant questions about the integrity of those in law enforcement and the measures in place to protect the identities of the deceased. Investigators continue to gather evidence as they examine the full extent of Sguros’s actions.
