Renowned British actress Judi Dench has shared that her vision impairment has significantly deteriorated, affecting her ability to act and read. The 91-year-old Oscar winner revealed her struggles during an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program, stating, “I can’t be on stage. I can’t do a play anymore. I can’t do a film anymore. I can’t read anymore.”

Diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 2012, Dench has faced increasing challenges related to the condition. As she noted in a previous interview, the disease impacts her ability to see directly in front of her, further complicating her work in film and theater.

Reflecting on her situation, Dench expressed a pragmatic outlook, advising herself to “make allowances” for her condition. “You just get on and don’t think about it too much,” she mentioned. Despite the difficulties brought by aging, she maintains a resolute attitude, commenting, “There’s nothing to say for it at all,” when discussing the realities of getting older.

In a recent interview, Dench characterized aging as “rubbish,” encapsulating her frank view of the challenges it brings. Throughout her illustrious career, she has been a celebrated figure in the arts, known for her remarkable performances in Shakespearean plays, among others.

Dench’s journey highlights the resilience many face when confronting age-related obstacles. When reflecting on her younger self, she emphasized the importance of taking risks in her work. “If people say, ‘Oh, this is so like you, you’ve got to play it,’ no, that’s not the one to play,” she advised, underscoring her belief in embracing the unknown.

As she navigates this difficult chapter, Judi Dench continues to inspire with her candidness and enduring spirit, reminding us all of the ongoing journey of life and the art of resilience.
