Mary Peltola, the former U.S. Representative from Alaska, is postponing her campaign events after being involved in a car accident that resulted in minor injuries for her and her family. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, according to her campaign’s announcement.
Cheryl Bruce, Peltola’s campaign manager, stated that while the family is in good spirits, medical advice necessitates the rescheduling of her upcoming engagements in Fairbanks and Bethel. “Mary is disappointed that the accident is delaying the start of her Alaska Always Tour, and she is eager to get back on the campaign trail to speak directly with Alaskans about her plans,” Bruce elaborated.
The accident took place while Peltola was en route to the Alaska Federation of Natives’ annual banquet when their vehicle was struck by another car, as reported by local police. Anchorage authorities confirmed that the collision involved three vehicles and that all individuals involved sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
As the race heats up for the Senate seat, Peltola, a Democrat, faces off against incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. Her bid for the Senate comes after she was elected to the House in 2022 but lost her re-election in 2024, a year that saw President Trump win Alaska by a significant margin.
With the political landscape shifting, Sullivan’s re-election is shaping up to be more competitive than anticipated, as rising costs associated with the ongoing war with Iran tie back to the Republican agenda.
The incident is currently under investigation, and while Peltola takes time to recover, the campaign is focused on ensuring her message reaches voters once she is able to re-engage with them.
