A tragic incident unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, where a shooting left a teacher and three young children dead. The heart-wrenching event triggered a swift response from law enforcement and the community, as parents and families anxiously awaited news of their loved ones.
During the harrowing afternoon, a mother recounted the moment her 5th-grade son informed her of the chaos at school, describing the fear that gripped her heart. “The kids were bussed from the school to the church and were released to parents from youngest to oldest,” she said. Her son’s class was among the last to be released, heightening her anxiety.
The shooting occurred around 1 p.m. PT, when a suspected teenage gunman, armed with a long gun, forced his way into the school by shooting through locked doors. In the aftermath, the community mourned the loss of innocent lives, including children aged 5, 8, and 11, while two others, including a 7-year-old and another teacher, suffered critical injuries.
Witness reports indicated a chaotic scene, with a substantial police presence and frightened children being escorted to safety. One bystander shared a chilling account of seeing a gunman throw a shotgun over a fence before turning and firing upon his vehicle. This individual narrowly escaped the violence, prompting him to call 911 as he sped away.
As the community gathered for a vigil that evening, Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler expressed the profound sorrow enveloping the city: “This is a dark day for our community, and there are simply no words for the loss that we have suffered.” The suspect, a 16-year-old local resident, was ultimately shot and killed by a good Samaritan who intervened during the attack.
The names of the victims have not yet been released, but the impact of this tragedy will resonate throughout the community for years to come.
