In a significant move reflecting the ongoing challenges within the streaming industry, Netflix has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 6%, equating to about 1,000 jobs. This decision was communicated internally on Wednesday and highlights the company’s struggle to enhance user engagement amidst a competitive market.
Netflix’s co-CEOs, Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos, addressed the layoffs in an email to employees, emphasizing the necessity for disciplined prioritization of resources to fulfill their ambitious mission of “entertaining the world.”
The Wall Street Journal first reported on these layoffs, which have been confirmed by sources familiar with the situation. Despite being a leading player in the streaming landscape, Netflix has faced challenges in attracting and retaining subscribers. Recent data shows that users watched over 97 billion hours of content in the first half of 2026, marking only a 2% increase compared to the previous year, as per the company’s latest quarterly earnings report.
In a recent media conference, Sarandos acknowledged the slower growth, stating, “Overall, we’re not growing as fast as I want us to, and we’re working on making that move faster.” The company’s upcoming third-quarter financial results are set to be released next Tuesday, which will provide further insights into its performance.
The layoffs will predominantly affect teams in product, technology, legal, and human resources as Netflix seeks to streamline operations and enhance its focus on high-impact areas. This decision aligns with broader trends in Hollywood, where major studios like The Walt Disney Co. have also been cutting jobs to reduce costs amid a challenging economic environment.
As Netflix continues to explore new avenues for boosting subscriber engagement, including live sports and video podcasts, the impacts of these layoffs may shape the company’s strategy moving forward.
