In a significant policy update, Airbnb has announced that hosts can no longer impose extensive cleaning duties on guests. This change comes in response to mounting customer complaints regarding unreasonable requests from hosts, such as washing dishes and making beds, which are typically associated with professional cleaning services.
Effective November 20, Airbnb will enforce guidelines that require hosts to set “reasonable” cleaning expectations. Guests will not be responsible for tasks that demand considerable effort or time, which are usually undertaken by cleaners. Airbnb’s decision aims to clarify these responsibilities and enhance the overall guest experience.
Previously, while guests were charged cleaning fees, there was no standardized policy governing what hosts could ask of their renters. This led to frustrations among guests who felt burdened by excessive chores during their stays. Travel industry expert Clint Henderson noted, “The complaints have been really ramping up lately with owners asking guests to do the most ridiculous things.” He emphasized that guests are often questioning the value of staying at an Airbnb when faced with such demands.
Gabriel Valk, an Airbnb host from South Carolina, expressed mixed feelings about these changes. While he believes that small tasks should be part of common courtesy, he understands the need for clearer guidelines given the service fees that already cover cleaning costs. He remarked, “It totally makes sense to me” that guests would expect not to have to do chores on top of paying for their stay.
This policy shift appears to be a strategic move for Airbnb as it seeks to retain its customer base amidst increasing competition from traditional hotels, which generally do not require guests to perform cleaning tasks. As air travel and accommodation costs rise, many travelers are reconsidering their options, making it crucial for Airbnb to adapt to consumer preferences to maintain its competitive edge in the market.
