In a troubling incident that has raised concerns about safety in public spaces, a 39-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in Central Park on Saturday night. The attack occurred near East 66th Street and Fifth Avenue, as the victim was approached by an assailant wielding a knife.
The New York City Police Department responded to the scene around 9:30 PM, and the woman was transported to a nearby hospital, where she is currently in stable condition. As of now, no details about the suspect have been released, and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin expressed her outrage regarding the incident, stating, “I am outraged by this horrific act of violence.” She extended her thoughts to the survivor, wishing her a full recovery and emphasizing that every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in the city. Menin voiced her confidence in the NYPD’s efforts to apprehend the perpetrator swiftly.
This incident adds to a series of recent attacks in Central Park, which has seen increasing incidents of violence. Just last week, another woman reported being assaulted while riding her bicycle in the park during the evening hours. The growing frequency of such events has sparked discussions about safety measures in public areas.
