Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, has announced plans to undergo surgery for a lung nodule detected during recent medical examinations. The 71-year-old pontiff shared this news with the public during his traditional Sunday prayer at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.

During his address, Pope Leo revealed, “Recently, during some medical tests, doctors discovered a localized nodule in my lung.” He assured the crowd that the nodule was identified at an early stage and was well localized, prompting doctors to recommend surgical intervention.

The procedure is scheduled to take place in the coming days, and the pope expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the faithful. “I entrust myself to your prayers,” he stated, eliciting applause from the thousands gathered in the square.

In addition to addressing his health, Pope Leo XIV used his speech to call for peace in Ukraine and emphasized the importance of safe grain transport across the Black Sea, stating, “The daily bread of millions of people cannot be held hostage by war.”

Known for his active lifestyle, including weekly tennis games, Pope Leo has not previously reported any health issues. He is currently scheduled for an upcoming trip to South America, visiting Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru in November, though it remains unclear if his surgery and recovery will affect these plans.

Born Robert Francis Prevost, he has served in various capacities within the Vatican and has a rich history of ministry, particularly in Peru. His father, Louis Prevost, was a World War II Navy veteran and later a superintendent of schools, while his mother was a librarian and educator.
