A tragic shooting incident at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, claimed the lives of three children and a teacher on Thursday afternoon. The 16-year-old shooter was killed by a community member who intervened during the attack, according to police reports.

Witnesses reported that the assailant gained access to the school by firing through the locked doors shortly after 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET). Police were on the scene within three minutes of the first emergency call, which alerted them to the ongoing violence.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, as investigations continue into how the suspect acquired the weapon used in the attack. Authorities confirmed that multiple 911 calls were received from individuals inside the school, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement.

On arrival, officers discovered that the suspect had been shot by a local resident who had witnessed the situation unfold. The school, which serves over 400 students and 40 staff members, was placed on lockdown as police evacuated the premises, directing students and staff to a nearby church for reunification.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek commended the bravery of the community member who intervened and praised the swift actions of the school staff and first responders. The identities of the victims, aged 5, 8, and 11, along with a teacher, have not been disclosed, but families have been notified.

Additionally, a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment. The investigation into the shooting continues, with law enforcement presence expected at the school for several days as they gather more information.

The community is grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event, as local officials emphasize the need for schools to be safe environments for children. Classes across the Bend-La Pine Schools district have been canceled as the community mourns the loss and seeks answers.
