A tragic incident occurred in Missouri when a Texas couple was charged in connection with the shooting death of Alyssa Wilson, a 17-year-old high school student, who was on her way to the St. Louis Zoo for Halloween festivities. The attack, which has left the community in shock, resulted in charges against Willie Herndon, 42, for first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
According to the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the couple’s actions were entirely unprovoked as they had no connection to Wilson. Investigators revealed that Herndon’s wife, Taiya, is also facing charges for hindering prosecution, as she allegedly assisted her husband in fleeing the scene.
The shooting took place on a Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri. Alyssa was struck by a bullet while driving her red Buick Encore. Eyewitness accounts and security footage depicted a white Buick Enclave stopped on the shoulder, from which a gunshot was fired shortly after the couple exited the vehicle.
Alyssa’s father, Robert Hickman, expressed heartbreak over the loss of his daughter, who was just two months shy of her 18th birthday. He described her as a young woman full of excitement for her future, looking forward to a family trip to Disney to meet her favorite character, Princess Tiana. “This was a senseless act,” he lamented.
The couple was apprehended after a detailed investigation that included the use of security video and license plate readers to track their vehicle. Authorities conducted an extensive surveillance operation that ultimately led to their arrest at a hotel in Illinois. A search of their room uncovered a firearm and additional evidence related to the case.
As the situation unfolds, the Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate potential connections to other crimes, and the community is rallying around the Hickman family during this devastating time.
