When battling the common cold, many people experience more than just nasal congestion; they often find themselves with a sore, irritated nose. This discomfort can stem from a combination of factors, including the dry indoor air, constant nose blowing, and the cold itself. To better understand why this happens and how to alleviate the irritation, we consulted two ear, nose, and throat specialists.

Dr. Ryan Salvador and Dr. Madeleine Herman explain that the irritation inside your nose during a cold is primarily a result of your body’s immune response to the virus. As the immune system kicks into gear, it causes inflammation and swelling in the nasal tissues, leading to increased mucus production. This, combined with the need to frequently blow or wipe the nose, can result in a painful cycle of irritation and discomfort.

Fortunately, there are several strategies to help prevent or reduce nasal irritation during cold season. Keeping your nasal passages moisturized is crucial. Saline nasal sprays can help maintain moisture levels, while using a humidifier at night can counteract the drying effects of indoor heating. Additionally, experts recommend using gentle, fragrance-free tissues to minimize irritation from constant wiping.

For those already experiencing discomfort, products like Vaseline Original Healing Jelly can provide a protective barrier around the nose, while Ponaris Nasal Emollient offers soothing moisture directly to the nasal passages. Other options include Ayr Saline Nasal Gel and Beekeeper’s Naturals Saline Nasal Spray, which are designed to hydrate and soothe inflamed tissues.

By implementing these practices and utilizing effective products, individuals can significantly ease the discomfort associated with a cold and keep their noses feeling better during the chilly months ahead.
