A Canadian tourist has been found guilty of animal cruelty after a bizarre incident involving the theft of a flamingo at a Las Vegas hotel. Mitchell Fairbarn, 27, was convicted on Monday following a trial that revealed he took a flamingo named Peachy from its enclosure at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and carried it to his room while intoxicated.
During the trial, prosecutors painted a picture of Fairbarn’s actions as reckless and harmful to the bird. The defense argued that Fairbarn did not intend to cause harm, describing his actions as foolish and fueled by alcohol. However, jurors ultimately sided with the prosecution, leading to felony and misdemeanor convictions against Fairbarn.
Fairbarn’s defense attorney acknowledged the impact of alcohol on his client’s judgment, stating, “Mitch was drunk. Mitch was stupid. He made bad decisions.” The court heard that the flamingo suffered physical injuries during the incident, including missing feathers and visible blood, which were found when the bird was recovered.
Video evidence presented at the trial showed Fairbarn holding the flamingo in a hotel elevator, drawing attention to the inappropriate treatment of the animal. After the jury’s decision, Fairbarn remains in custody and is set for sentencing on December 1, where he could face up to four years in prison for the felony charge.
Veterinarians have reported that Peachy is physically stable but displays increased anxiety following the incident. The case has sparked discussions about animal rights and the need for stricter laws concerning animal cruelty in Nevada. Advocates hope this verdict sends a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated.
As Fairbarn awaits sentencing, the aftermath of his actions continues to resonate, with many emphasizing the importance of treating animals with respect and care.
