In a controversial move, President Donald Trump has announced the formation of a committee aimed at probing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, in what appears to be an ongoing effort to remove her from her position. This development follows a Supreme Court ruling that, while allowing Cook to remain in her role, did not prevent the White House from pursuing her dismissal.
The presidential memorandum states, “By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby establish a committee of inquiry to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook made false statements in connection with one or more mortgage instruments.” The committee is expected to convene on November 5, just two days after the midterm elections, to conduct a hearing where Cook will have the opportunity to defend herself against the allegations.
This unprecedented action by the White House comes in the wake of previous attempts to remove Cook, which were met with legal challenges. In August, a senior White House official had already expressed Trump’s intent to fire her, indicating a long-standing campaign against her within the administration. Cook’s legal team has reacted strongly, asserting that the upcoming hearing lacks legitimacy and questioning the motives behind Trump’s actions.
Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the president’s actions, labeling the committee a “kangaroo court” and urging Trump to focus on pressing national issues rather than undermining the Federal Reserve. The scrutiny surrounding Cook intensified after allegations of mortgage fraud were made public, claims that Cook’s lawyers contend are unfounded and politically motivated.
Despite the pressure, Cook has maintained her innocence, with her legal representatives asserting that there is no legal basis for her removal. They argue that the allegations stem from a broader effort by the Trump administration to manipulate the Federal Reserve’s policies, particularly around interest rates, to serve its interests.
As this political drama unfolds, the implications for the Federal Reserve and its independence remain a critical concern for many observers, who worry about the potential consequences of such unprecedented executive actions.
