KALISPELL, Mont. — Despite a reported increase of 3.7% in the U.S. inflation rate over the past year, President Donald Trump confidently declared at a rally on Wednesday that “we have very little inflation.” This proclamation came as he campaigned for Republican candidates ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
While Trump painted a picture of a robust economy, claiming that poverty is declining and investments are soaring, many attendees expressed a different reality. Supporters at the event voiced their struggles with rising grocery, housing, and fuel costs, indicating a disconnect between Trump’s optimistic narrative and their daily experiences.
Moneen Ahlquist, an 84-year-old from Missoula, shared her strategy of combining errands to save on gas, reflecting the financial strain many feel. “We can’t afford stuff because the prices are so bad,” said Megan Gurhlke, a dairy farm worker, emphasizing that despite multiple family members working full-time, making ends meet has become increasingly difficult.
As Trump continues to assert that the economy is thriving under his policies, his supporters remain largely unwilling to place the blame on him for their current financial challenges. Instead, many pointed fingers at the Biden administration, expressing hope that Trump’s policies would eventually improve their circumstances.
Gary Hanson, a local hardware store owner, noted, “It’s going to take a long time to turn everything around,” suggesting a sense of patience among supporters for Trump’s economic strategies to take effect. Despite expressing grievances over high fuel costs, attendees like Jennifer Piperakis remained loyal, praising Trump’s support for veterans and expressing discontent with Biden’s leadership.
With the midterm elections approaching, polling indicates that widespread dissatisfaction with the economy could threaten the Republican majority in Congress. As Trump continues to rally his base and promote his economic agenda, the stark contrast between his message and the concerns of his supporters may play a significant role in determining electoral outcomes.
