Troy Jackson, a Democrat, has emerged victorious over long-standing Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine, a significant development projected by NBC News that strengthens the Democratic majority in the Senate following the midterm elections.
Collins, who has held her seat for decades, became a key target for Democrats due to her status as the only Republican from a state that voted against Donald Trump two years prior. Despite her historical success in the Democratic-leaning state, the political landscape shifted dramatically this election cycle, fueled by growing anti-Trump sentiment.
Jackson effectively linked Collins to Trump, capitalizing on the latter’s declining approval ratings in Maine. After stepping in as the Democratic nominee in late July—following Graham Platner’s withdrawal amid sexual assault allegations—Jackson quickly established a campaign that resonated with voters.
During the debates, Jackson accused Collins of aligning with Trump 96% of the time and criticized her for not using her influence effectively to benefit Mainers. Collins defended her record, emphasizing her role in securing federal funding for various state projects and pushing back against Jackson’s claims.
In a notable turn, Jackson positioned himself as a working-class candidate, drawing from his roots as a former logger in northern Maine. He was the first challenger from Collins’ home county, Aroostook County, to take her on directly. Despite attempts by Republicans to paint him as an establishment politician with a history of tax increases, Jackson’s appeal as a grassroots figure resonated with many voters.
While Jackson’s platform included progressive policies like “Medicare for All” and the abolition of ICE, he also faced scrutiny regarding his political evolution, having previously held more conservative views. His strong ties to labor unions aided his successful nomination after a prior run for governor this year.
The political environment favored Jackson as concerns over Trump’s policies loomed large among voters. Collins, who distanced herself from Trump during her campaign, struggled to overcome the strong anti-Trump sentiment that characterized this election cycle, ultimately losing her seat after serving since 1997.
As Maine prepares for new leadership, Jackson’s win marks a pivotal moment for Democrats, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape of the state.
