Billionaire Leon Black has initiated a defamation lawsuit against California Representative Robert Garcia, who serves as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. This committee is currently investigating Jeffrey Epstein, a case that has drawn significant attention due to its implications involving powerful individuals.
The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of New York, accuses Garcia of making false statements about Black’s involvement with Epstein. Black claims Garcia has “knowingly and willfully lied” about him, suggesting he was “at the center” of Epstein’s criminal activities. This legal action comes after Black faced subpoenas from the committee for failing to comply with requests for testimony.
In September, the House Oversight Committee voted unanimously to hold Black in contempt for not responding to their subpoenas. This escalation has been part of a broader investigation into Epstein’s network, with Black’s connections to Epstein raising eyebrows since his resignation from Apollo Global Management in 2021, following an internal review of his ties to the convicted sex offender.
Garcia, who is expected to assume leadership of the Oversight Committee in January, previously stated that Black had financially supported Epstein’s abuse and trafficking of women, and he emphasized the seriousness of the allegations against Black, including accusations of sexual assault from multiple women.
In response to the lawsuit, a spokesperson for Black asserted his innocence, claiming he has never been involved in any abusive or trafficking activities and denied paying Epstein for any illicit services.
This legal battle highlights the ongoing tensions between powerful figures and their scrutiny in high-profile investigations, particularly those involving sensitive topics like sexual abuse and trafficking. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how it will impact both Black’s reputation and Garcia’s emerging role in Congress.
