In a significant turn of events during the midterm elections, Democrats have secured crucial victories in secretary of state races across four pivotal presidential battlegrounds, enhancing their control over the electoral process leading into the 2028 elections. The Democratic Party’s success in these key positions is not only a triumph in traditionally competitive states but also marks gains in historically Republican territories.
Democratic candidates successfully retained their posts in Arizona, Michigan, and Nevada while also flipping the secretary of state office in Georgia. This expansion of influence has also seen Democrats gaining control in the Republican-leaning states of Indiana and Ohio. Notably, the new Georgia Secretary of State, Penny Brown Reynolds, will take over from Brad Raffensperger, who faced backlash for rejecting attempts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.
In Michigan, Democratic Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist triumphed over Republican Anthony Forlini, who had previously been criticized for sharing voter data with the Trump administration. Meanwhile, incumbents Adrian Fontes in Arizona and Cisco Aguilar in Nevada successfully defended their positions against far-right challengers, experiencing significantly improved margins compared to their previous electoral fights.
In Texas, the anticipated victory of Democrat Gina Hinojosa in the gubernatorial race is expected to grant the party further influence over state elections, as the secretary of state is appointed by the governor. The role of secretary of state has gained prominence in recent years amidst ongoing allegations of election fraud, particularly fueled by former President Trump’s rhetoric.
Despite these victories, the Democrats faced challenges in certain areas. For instance, Iowa’s Republican Secretary of State Paul Pate managed to retain his position against Democrat Ryan Peterman, even as the party celebrated victories in other statewide races. Similarly, in Kansas, the secretary of state race remained too close to call, with Republicans maintaining a stronghold in the state.
The Democrats’ focused campaigns in traditionally red states, along with successful messaging surrounding integrity and election security, have allowed them to make significant strides in the political landscape leading up to the next presidential election cycle.
