In a significant upset within Michigan’s political landscape, progressive candidate William Lawrence has unseated Republican Rep. Tom Barrett, marking a notable victory for the Democratic Party’s left wing in a district that previously supported Donald Trump in the 2024 election. NBC News has projected Lawrence’s win in the closely contested race for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District.

This triumph is particularly striking as it signals a shift in voter sentiment, with Lawrence capitalizing on local dissatisfaction regarding the economy and controversial data center developments. As a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, he campaigned against the proliferation of data centers and advocated for stringent regulations on artificial intelligence.

Lawrence’s path to the general election was not straightforward; he advanced from a contentious primary with less than half the votes, a reflection of the challenges he faced even within his party. His campaign resonated with voters who are increasingly critical of the concentration of corporate power, particularly in tech.

In a conversation with NBC News, Lawrence emphasized the urgency of addressing the threats posed by tech companies, stating that “the extreme concentration of power may be the single greatest threat that we face.” His campaign also involved distancing himself from some of his more radical past statements, including a controversial social media post during the pandemic.

In contrast, Barrett, a first-term congressman and Army veteran, attempted to position himself as a moderate, distancing from Trump and addressing local concerns about data centers. Despite his efforts, including legislation aimed at giving local authorities more control over data center regulations, Barrett could not overcome the mounting dissatisfaction among voters.

The election outcome reflects a broader trend of changing political dynamics in swing districts, as voters express frustration with the current economic situation and political leadership. Lawrence’s win suggests a growing appetite for progressive policies even in traditionally conservative areas.
