In a curious turn of events following the midterm elections, President Donald Trump is focusing on the physical aesthetics of the White House, particularly the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room. During his recent public addresses, he has highlighted his desire to preserve the historical integrity of these iconic spaces.
Following significant Republican losses in the midterms, Trump has taken to the podium twice, using each opportunity to emphasize his renovation projects at the White House. On Thursday, he signed a proclamation that designates the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room as a national monument, aiming to prevent future presidents from making substantial changes without congressional approval.
“We’re going to be declaring it a national monument, and we’re going to send it over to Congress to have it ratified,” Trump stated, expressing his wish to shield these rooms from alterations. He stressed that any major modifications would require congressional approval, hoping lawmakers would resist any drastic changes.
The White House has held the status of a National Historic Landmark since 1960, and Trump’s proclamation underscores its significance as a historic structure deserving of protection. He articulated his view that the Oval Office merits special recognition, further elaborating on his vision for the White House as the ultimate symbol of America.
Interestingly, Trump’s recent comments come on the heels of another media appearance at the construction site of a new ballroom at the White House. In a week filled with reflections on his presidency, he also touted the reopening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which had been closed due to renovation issues. He declared, “It’s got to be pristine — it’s got to be perfect,” as he underscored his focus on maintaining the grandeur of the White House.
Despite the challenges faced in the midterms, Trump remains steadfast in his commitment to his renovation efforts. As he navigates the final months of his presidency, it’s clear that the aesthetic and historical legacy of the White House is at the forefront of his agenda.
