James Talarico, a surprising victor in Texas’ U.S. Senate race, made an unexpected appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” just days after flipping a seat that had been held by Republicans for decades. The newly elected senator humorously introduced himself as “the guy who’s been texting you every day,” alluding to his campaign’s fundraising efforts.

Talarico’s election victory over Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton came during a significant wave of Democratic successes, which also saw Gina Hinojosa defeat Governor Greg Abbott. This shift marks a notable change in the political landscape of Texas, traditionally known as a Republican stronghold.

The “SNL” episode’s cold open featured a sketch with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Chuck Schumer, played by Kenan Thompson and Sarah Sherman, respectively. They celebrated the recent Democratic wins, framing Jeffries as the likely new House speaker. The tone was light, but the implications of these victories are profound for the Democratic Party.

As Talarico took the stage, he played off his newfound fame, quipping about the Democrats’ recent electoral success, which he dubbed a “blue Toonami.” He emphasized the need for change, not just in governance but also in the comedic portrayal of politics on shows like “SNL.”

During his appearance, Talarico engaged in banter with former President Donald Trump, who was portrayed by James Austin Johnson. The two exchanged quips about the state of American politics, with Talarico suggesting a collaboration to improve life for everyday Americans. He jokingly questioned how many more political sketches “SNL” would produce, to which Trump humorously replied, “Infinity.”

With Talarico’s election and his memorable “SNL” debut, it’s clear that both he and the Democratic Party are looking to capitalize on the momentum of recent victories as they navigate the political landscape ahead.
