In a significant political development, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, representing New York, has openly endorsed the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, declaring himself a “hard yes” in support of the resolution. This announcement was made during an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” where Jeffries expressed solidarity with Republican Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky, who has been advocating for Hegseth’s impeachment.
Jeffries criticized Hegseth for allegedly abusing his power and compromising national security, particularly in relation to the ongoing conflict in Iran. “The so-called secretary of defense has abused his power, undermined our national security and engineered this reckless and costly war of choice in Iran,” said Jeffries. His strong stance may influence how other Democrats in the House approach the impending vote.
The impeachment resolution is anticipated to be introduced early this week as the House reconvenes. Jeffries indicated that discussions among House Democrats regarding their support for the resolution would take place on Tuesday morning. This move comes amid a backdrop of rising dissatisfaction among voters regarding the administration’s management of the war in Iran, which has been a central issue in recent elections.
Hegseth, on his part, has vigorously opposed the impeachment efforts, labeling Massie a “disgruntled, defeated congressman” in a social media video. He asserted, “It’s all about the politics of personal destruction,” suggesting that such tactics have failed against former President Trump and would similarly fail against him.
As tensions rise within Congress, the outcome of this impeachment push remains uncertain. Republicans have previously delayed votes on Hegseth’s impeachment, and the dynamics of support among Democrats could shape the future of this high-profile case. Jeffries’ backing signals a potentially pivotal moment in the political landscape as the House prepares for crucial discussions on this contentious issue.
