Aaron Ford, the Democratic Attorney General of Nevada, has emerged victorious in the state’s gubernatorial race, according to projections from NBC News, unseating Republican incumbent Joe Lombardo. This historic win makes Ford the first Black governor in Nevada’s history.
The election served as a pivotal referendum on Lombardo’s and former President Donald Trump’s economic policies. Ford’s campaign focused on criticizing the “Lombardo-Trump economy,” highlighting the adverse effects of Trump’s tax cuts and spending initiatives on vulnerable Nevadans. The economic message resonated strongly with voters who have been grappling with rising costs of living in the state.
Ford’s victory is a significant blow to the GOP, especially after their successful campaign in 2022, and it sets the stage for a more competitive political landscape ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Voters in Nevada, a crucial battleground state, have shown a readiness for change, especially in light of the economic challenges faced by many residents.
Throughout the campaign, Ford and his allies pointed to the negative impacts of Trump’s tariffs on a state heavily reliant on tourism. Additionally, they criticized Lombardo’s ties to Trump, particularly an agreement that could facilitate the establishment of more data centers on public land, which Ford argued would not benefit the local economy.
As Ford takes office, he aims to address the pressing economic issues that have been at the forefront of voters’ minds, making it clear that his administration will prioritize the needs of Nevadans as they navigate a challenging economic landscape.
