Ernie Johnson, the iconic host of “Inside the NBA,” has announced his retirement from the show after the current season, concluding a remarkable 37-year career that has made him a beloved figure in sports broadcasting. At 70 years old, Johnson expressed that the demands of preparation for each episode have become increasingly challenging, prompting his decision to step back.
In his heartfelt farewell announcement, Johnson expressed deep gratitude to his colleagues, including Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley, describing his role as the ultimate “get-to” job. He emphasized the joy he found in sharing countless nights with his team, stating, “I still can’t believe I get to do this for a living.”
Reflecting on his long tenure, Johnson noted that he has always prided himself on his preparation. However, he acknowledged that if the joy of the job ever turned into a burden, it would be time to move on. “Total honesty here. I’ve always vowed that if that ever became more of a challenge than it is a joy, then I’ll know it’s time to step away,” he said.
Johnson’s battle with health issues, including heart disease and cancer, has also played a role in his decision to retire. He underwent bypass surgery 14 months ago and has faced various health challenges over the years. Despite these obstacles, he maintained a positive outlook on his career and the relationships he has built throughout the years.
As Johnson prepares to exit the stage, questions loom about the future of his co-hosts, particularly Charles Barkley, who has described their pairing as a “package deal.” Barkley expressed his emotional farewell, stating, “It’s been an honor and privilege to work with you all this time.” He shared that fans often inquire about Johnson’s character, to which he always responds that Johnson is even better than he appears.
Johnson’s departure marks the end of an era for “Inside the NBA,” a show that has become synonymous with basketball coverage and has captivated audiences for decades. As he steps away, the sports world will undoubtedly feel the impact of his absence, but his legacy will continue through the countless memories he created with fans and colleagues alike.
