A tragic incident unfolded in Brooklyn as a public school aide was arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Katie Suarez, a 28-year-old jogger. The arrest of Sayed Mohassib, 27, followed an apparent random attack on October 30 along the Belt Parkway bike path.
According to police reports, Mohassib, who briefly served as an NYPD officer, was found carrying a knife during his arrest. He reportedly told investigators that he had blacked out and was unaware of his actions until he regained consciousness, covered in blood. This chilling account adds a disturbing layer to the already tragic event.
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in identifying Mohassib as the suspect. Detectives observed him discarding garbage bags near his residence shortly after the stabbing, prompting further investigation into potential evidence disposal.
After being stabbed multiple times in the neck, Suarez was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries several days later. Her family had been anxiously waiting for her return from her run when her father discovered her in distress.
The New York City Department of Education confirmed that Mohassib was a paraprofessional at P.S. 200 in Brooklyn and continued to work even after the incident. The department has since suspended him and is moving towards termination, emphasizing their commitment to student safety.
Law enforcement officials believe the attack was random, leaving the community in shock and mourning the loss of a young life cut short. As investigations proceed, questions remain about Mohassib’s mental health history and the circumstances surrounding his employment with the school district.
