Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is calling on Democrats to prioritize healthcare and food assistance as they prepare to take control of Congress in January. In a recent interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” he expressed his hope for revitalizing Medicare and SNAP programs while also emphasizing the need for accountability regarding the previous administration.

Shapiro highlighted the urgent need to reverse cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and the Affordable Care Act, stating, “I hope one of the first things that Congress does is to stop these Medicaid cuts, stop the SNAP cuts, roll back the cuts.” He pointed out alarming statistics, revealing that over 650,000 Pennsylvanians would be affected by these cuts, a direct consequence of decisions made during Donald Trump’s presidency.

In addition to focusing on social programs, Shapiro believes that Democrats must adopt an aggressive agenda aimed at reducing costs and improving the lives of Americans. He remarked, “It’s incumbent upon Congress… to make people’s lives better in 2027,” while urging them to also hold the Trump administration accountable for its actions during its tenure.

Despite speculation about his potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential election, Shapiro maintained that his current focus is on his role as governor. “I committed to run for governor, and that’s the work I’m focused on doing,” he stated, though he did not rule out future political ambitions.

As the political landscape shifts, the governor’s comments reflect a strategic approach for Democrats to address pressing issues while preparing for the next electoral cycle. Shapiro’s call for a dual focus on accountability and policy reform sets the tone for the party’s agenda in the coming years.
