In a significant shift for reality television, Channel 4 has announced that it will no longer air the U.K. adaptation of “Married At First Sight” following serious allegations of sexual misconduct and rape during the show’s sixth season. This decision comes after an external review was prompted by claims from two women who reported being raped while filming, alongside a third who accused her onscreen partner of sexual misconduct.

Channel 4’s chief executive, Priya Dogra, confirmed the network’s withdrawal from the series, emphasizing that while the review found no wrongdoing by the network or production company CPL, it was deemed necessary to put an end to the show. Dogra stated that the welfare protocols in place were praised, yet she felt it was time for Channel 4 to move beyond this format.

The allegations surfaced in a BBC Panorama investigation over the summer, revealing shocking claims from one contestant about being raped and threatened with an acid attack by her matched partner. All three men involved have denied the allegations. The format of “Married At First Sight,” which involves strangers being paired for marriage and filmed as they navigate their relationships, has faced scrutiny previously for its treatment of participants.

The review conducted by a law firm examined extensive footage and documentation, confirming that while safety protocols were generally followed, there were lapses in the application of the welfare framework. The findings prompted recommendations for increased monitoring and supervision, which Dogra acknowledged could fundamentally alter the show’s dynamic.

Dogra noted the network’s commitment to reinvest the budget from “Married At First Sight” into new projects that prioritize the welfare of participants. CPL expressed understanding of the decision, reiterating its commitment to contributor welfare, despite the review finding the existing protocols to be thorough and effective.

The controversy surrounding “Married At First Sight” U.K. is not isolated; similar issues have arisen in its Australian counterpart, where previous contestants have raised concerns over the safety and emotional toll of their experiences on the show. As the reality series landscape continues to evolve, the implications of this decision may lead to broader discussions regarding participant safety in reality television.
