Tragedy struck Winston-Salem State University on Saturday night as a homecoming celebration turned into chaos with two separate shootings on campus. The incidents resulted in one fatality and three injuries, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
During a press conference early Sunday, Winston-Salem Police officials stated that they are in the initial phases of their investigation and are currently assessing whether the shootings are related. Details regarding suspects or arrests have not yet been released.
Assistant Chief Jason Swaim reassured the public, stating, “What we can tell you is campus is secure. The surrounding community is secure.” He extended condolences to the victims’ families and noted an increased police presence on campus in the days to follow.
The police were alerted to the shootings around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday. Emergency audio recordings revealed one victim sustained a serious gunshot wound to the head, while another call requested an additional ambulance to the scene.
Saturday was particularly significant, as it was homecoming game day for the university, with the Winston-Salem State Rams competing against the Fayetteville State Broncos earlier in the day. The celebratory atmosphere was abruptly overshadowed by violence, leaving the campus community in shock.
“Homecoming is traditionally a time of celebration and connection,” Swaim remarked, highlighting the stark contrast to the events that unfolded. The university community now faces both grief and uncertainty as investigations continue.
